Will Apple make improvements on iPhone Air and bring back a worthy second generation iPhone Air 2?

iPhone Air sequel is widely expected to happen but not in 2027

The iPhone Air brought renewed hope to the tech world. It was, after a long time, that Apple brought innovation to the iPhone’s design. Yes, it was still a regular, boring rectangular slab at first glance. But the real magic was when someone picked it up off the table. The iPhone was lighter than ever. It was a refreshing departure from the bulky and cumbersome smartphones that have become the industry standard. The fact that iPhone Air could fit its brains behind the camera hump was a polite reminder that the engineers at Apple had produced something special.

However, as the launch dates of iPhone Air approached, consumers turned away. The iPhone 17 and 17 Pro were more competent than ever, the buyers concluded.

iPhone Air felt wasteful, a missed opportunity, and most importantly, an expensive misfire.

However, the reports of Apple giving another shot at the iPhone Air have been welcomed by Apple “fanboys”.

iPhone Air Underwhelms

iPhone Air is the thinnest smartphone ever produced by Apple. Its sleek design, ProMotion display, and weight were its major selling points. Cased in a titanium body, iPhone Air also endured durability tests with ease.

However, the novelty of iPhone Air quickly wore off.

Potential buyers weren’t convinced by its hefty price tag of Rs 1,19,900. They felt Apple’s flagship iPhone 17 series was more bang for buck. iPhone Air came equipped with only one camera, thus missing out on ultrawide or telephoto. The ultra-thin design also limited the iPhone Air to a single mono speaker, which tech reviewers found underwhelming. Additionally, the device’s thinness significantly compromised battery life.

In his Smartphone Awards 2025, Marques Brownlee of MKBHD YouTube channel, the iPhone Air bagged the Design Award. Brownlee praised it for its “freaky featherweight”.

“Nobody asked for this. But damn is it nice. Rearranged internals, to create this freaky featherweight form AND pass durability tests? Once you get used to it, everything else feels like a brick.”

The real-world functionality, however, trumped the sleekness of the iPhone Air. Weeks after its launch, reports emerged that Apple was cutting production of the iPhone Air, and few in the tech community were surprised.

iPhone Air 2

Along with rumours of an iPhone Fold possibly becoming a reality in the near future came the news of Apple taking a second shot at its unsuccessful iPhone Air.

It has been reported that Apple has decided to go back to the drawing board and address at least two complaints that were raised by the public. The single camera and the piercing price tag of the iPhone Air. The iPhone Air 2 price is said to be lowered and the company will make it a dual rear camera system. Whether Apple decides to increase the battery size will be known in future.

iPhone Air 2 Availability

Apple has reportedly reserved 2026 for iPhone 18 Pro and the rumoured iPhone Fold. This would mean the enthusiasts would have to wait for more than a year as the iPhone Air 2 could hit the market in 2027. This delay, along with the rumoured improvements, could bring some positive spotlight to the Air.

What Does Public Think?

The response to the news of the iPhone Air 2, published by MacRumours, has largely been positive.

“I didn’t see this coming at all, I guess the iPhone Air won’t just be about paving the way for the iPhone Fold’s R&D. Cool,” wrote a user on X.

“needs a 2nd speaker. that was the only dealbreaker for me when i tried it (sic).”

“Good, I’m glad they’re aren’t just giving up on it. Still the best phone I’ve ever owned to this day.”

“The price was the deal breaker for many. Hard to justify it being more than the iPhone 17. At the same price it becomes interesting. Battery life is fine for target audience, and I only need one camera; if I needed more I would buy something else. One speaker is ok with me (sic).”

“Switch to a silicon carbon battery as well and it would sell. Battery and camera was everyone’s biggest issues with the device.”
