What to watch on Netflix: New TV shows and movies

Sean Combs: The Reckoning — Dec. 2

From executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Emmy Award–winning director Alexandria Stapleton, Sean Combs: The Reckoning is a four-part documentary that looks at the life of the media mogul, leading to him serving 50 months in U.S. federal prison after his conviction on two counts of transportation for the purpose of prostitution.

“Being a woman in the industry, and going through the #MeToo movement — watching giants in music and film go on trial, and to know what their outcomes were … When Cassie dropped her lawsuit, I just thought this could go a million different directions,” Stapleton told Tudum. “I wondered how she had the confidence to go out there against a mogul like Sean Combs. As a filmmaker, I instantly knew it was a stress test of whether we’ve changed as a culture, as far as being able to process allegations like this in a fair way.”

With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration — Dec. 3

Meghan Markle is expanding her Netflix content with the release of With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration to get you into the festive spirit.

Bringing the audience into her Montecito, California, home, she shares hosting tips, from cooking seasonal dishes to gift inspiration, with guests including Naomi Osaka, Tom Colicchio, Will Guidara, Kelly Zajfen and Lindsay Roth.

The Abandons — Dec. 4

Starring Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, The Abandons is set in Washington Territory in 1854, focused on the matriarchs of two families. The Van Nesses are a wealthy family dynasty, led by Constance Van Ness (Anderson), while the Abandons are a family of orphans protected by Fiona Nolan (Headey).

“This first chapter of The Abandons is a classic American story — the frontier, two families both at war and in love with each other, [and] a battle over who owns the land and who makes the rules,” executive producer Christopher Keyser told Tudum.

“In the middle of murder and revenge and a bit of illicit romance, we get to explore questions we never seem to get away from: What makes a family? How do you stay good in a bad world? And would you change who you are and what you believe in to protect what you love? But in this case, we do it all through the eyes of Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, as two widowed matriarchs battling to survive. And that … is really something to watch.”

Jay Kelly — Dec. 5

George Clooney and Adam Sandler star in Noah Baumbach’s film Jay Kelly. Clooney plays the title character, a movie star who’s managed by Sandler’s character, Ron Sukenick. As they take a trip across Europe, Jay Kelly uses it as an opportunity to discover who he is beyond his success as an actor.

“This character has a lot more regrets than I would have, because, luckily for me, fame came much later in my life,” Clooney told Tudum. “I got to figure out how to live life before I figured out how to be famous, and I don’t think this character did.”

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery — Dec. 12

Following its theatrical release, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery lands on the streaming platform in December.

Daniel Craig is joined by an all-star cast, including Glenn Close, Mila Kunis, Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin and Kerry Washington, as Benoit Blanc returns to solve another murder mystery.

This time, Blanc meets a young priest Jud Duplenticy (O’Connor), who’s sent to assist Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Brolin), and when a mysterious murder takes place, Blanc investigates alongside local police chief Geraldine Scott (Kunis).

Emily in Paris Season 5 — Dec. 18

Emily in Paris takes Rome for its fifth season, after Emily (Lily Collins) heads up Agence Grateau’s new Rome office, with sparks also flying between her and Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini).

“Timing definitely affects all of our decisions,” Lily Collins told Tudum. “I think that if you can accept being in an undecided state of mind and open to timing showing you a decision in and of itself, that’s when an amazing opportunity can come up. And Marcello happens to come at a time when Emily is starting to be able to sit in the uncomfortable and embrace what the world is bringing her, and she’s more open to new opportunity.”

“I think that’s perfect because Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily. We ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work-life balance. We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode.”

Goodbye June — Dec. 24

Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, Johnny Flynn and Toni Collette star in Goodbye June, which Winslet also directs. The film is about four adult siblings who reunite as their mother, June (Mirren), is deteriorating in health.

“It’s about the human condition. I hope that people will recognize themselves in the characters. It’s a film about family. Some of our most complicated relationships in life are with the people we love the most in the world, the people we are closest to, the people we need the most for support and care,” writer Joe Anders told Tudum. “In the UK, we struggle when talking about death. The power of a good goodbye is to remember to love each other in the present.”
