PIB warns of a deepfake video falsely attributing anti-government remarks to Lt Gen KJS Dhillon after the Tejas jet crash at Dubai Air Show, where Wing Commander Namansh Syal died.
Indian Tejas Fighter Jet Crash at Dubai Air Show
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a stern warning after identifying a digitally manipulated video circulating on social media that falsely attributes anti-government remarks to Lt Gen (Retd) KJS Dhillon.
According to the PIB, the clip appears to be AI-generated and is being spread by Pakistani propaganda accounts.
The manipulated video claims that Lt Gen Dhillon, a retired senior Indian Army officer, has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, particularly in connection with the recent Tejas jet crash at the Dubai Air Show.
But the PIB’s fact-check concludes that Dhillon made no such statements. “Lt Gen (Retd) KJS Dhillon has not made any such statement,” the PIB said in a post, calling the video a “deepfake” disseminated to sow mistrust in the Indian Armed Forces.
This comes after a Tejas fighter jet crashed during a flying demonstration at the Dubai Air Show on Friday, appearing to lose control during the stunt and bursting into a ball of flames.
Wing Commander Namansh Syal, who was flying the aircraft, died in the tragic incident.
The crash took place at Al Maktoum International Airport, where thousands had assembled for the high-profile air show. In the now-viral video, spectators can be seen leaping to their feet as the jet plunges, many instinctively filming the moment on their phones as emergency sirens echo across the airfield.
