Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms lashed large parts of the United Arab Emirates, an unusual weather spell for the largely arid country, leaving several areas of Dubai waterlogged, disrupting flights and prompting authorities to urge residents to stay indoors.
Several low-lying neighbourhoods in Dubai were submerged after hours of intense rain, with cars stranded on flooded roads in areas such as Karama and Al Barsha. Similar scenes were reported from Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, where traffic slowed to a crawl and emergency response teams were deployed to manage waterlogging and ensure public safety.
Air travel was affected as Emirates and flydubai cancelled or rescheduled multiple flights due to the severe weather. Dubai Airports said operations have largely returned to normal, but warned that delays could continue and advised passengers to check flight status with airlines before travelling.
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) forecast continued rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, hail and reduced visibility, along with rough sea conditions along the coast.
In response, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) asked private sector companies in affected areas to adopt remote work arrangements. Abu Dhabi authorities suspended community events, while adventure activities at Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah were temporarily closed.
The weather department said unstable conditions are likely to persist over the coming days and urged residents to remain cautious, follow official advisories and stay updated through emergency alerts and notifications.
The UAE typically experiences a desert climate, with minimal rainfall for most of the year and temperatures that remain high even during winter months. Annual rainfall is usually low and concentrated in short, sporadic spells, making prolonged or intense rain events such as the current one rare.
