Foxes’ looming points penalty
Football finance expert Stefan Borson believes Leicester City are unlikely to be hit with a nine or 12-point deduction ahead of their hearing with the Premier League.
The Foxes are at risk of a penalty as they stand accused of breaching profit and sustainability (PSR) rules in the 2023/24 season, when they won the Championship.
Leicester are also alleged to have failed to provide their annual accounts before the December 31 deadline.
Should an independent commission find the Foxes guilty of their financial breaches, they could be hit with a points penalty or even a transfer ban.
But speaking on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan, Borson felt any points deductions for Leicester would not be as severe as what has been reported elsewhere, with Nottingham Forest and Everton serving as case studies for why they shouldn’t expect a large penalty.
“There’s a lot of talk they’re going to get nine, 12 points, because people have looked at the EFL guidance and said, ‘Well, in the EFL, you get 12 points,'” Borson said.
“First of all, apparently they are defending the case, which means they’re not going to admit it early. That means there’s a question over co-operation and the documentation, which would mean if it is found against them, they are not going to get mitigation.
“And if they are not going to get mitigation, then what you’ve got is really the base for what this breach is.
“I would say, rather than it being the 12 or the nine points you’ve heard it about in the media, taking the previous cases, the Premier League cases of Everton and Nottingham Forest, it looks like they’re broadly around three base points for a significant breach – £20million is a significant breach – and more or less about a point for every £6.5m or three points for every 20 percent over the limit.
“I think it’s around six points.”
