The advance of artificial intelligence (AI) has happened at such a rapid rate that many fear we may lose control of it in the future.

This theme is addressed in the American science fiction film The Creator. Starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, and Allison Janney, it is set in 2070, fifteen years after an AI created by the US government detonated a nuclear warhead over Los Angeles.

The catastrophic event sparked a war between humans and the powerful technology, with a pledge from all but one area of the world to destroy it for good. The main target is the creator of a new weapon which could end the war.

The region of New Asia, which is made up of North, South and Southeast Asia, is the only place where AI is still celebrated. Former soldier Sergeant Joshua Taylor (Washington) is undercover in New Asia with his pregnant wife Maya (Chan) when their home is destroyed by US forces.

Five years later, Taylor is recruited to fight the new weapon—a robotic simulant in the form of a young girl with the power to control technology. His world is shattered as he uncovers the truth behind The Creator.

Filmed in Thailand and released in 2023, the movie received a generally positive response from critics. It made almost £92 million worldwide and was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound. It was also nominated for Best Science Fiction Film and Best Film Visual / Special Effects at the Saturn Awards.

Numerous fans of the film described it as “visually stunning” on Rotten Tomatoes where they shared their thoughts. “The part where they play Everything in its Right Place was so bone-chilling and exciting. Love the storyline,” enthused one.

Another shared: “One of the best films in a long time. Amazing movie! The sci-fi aspect is done very well, I love a movie that can make me laugh and cry in one sitting.”

Others also found it a moving watch: “An absolute must see for sure! I had never heard of this movie till today,” said one. “I’m such a big Sci-Fi movie fan and this is literally my number one best movie I have ever seen. I had all types of emotions throughout the film and truly would love to see a second movie.”

A second posted: “One of the best sci-fi movies I ever saw. Everything is in it, it’s profoundly humane and moving, the tempo is perfect, the story flows seamlessly… Must-see!!”
