Indian passports will now be upgraded to Radio Frequency (RF) chip–enabled e-passports, marking a major modernisation in passport security and convenience. Starting from October 28, RF e-passports have officially come into effect in the UAE, and all existing Indian passports will gradually be replaced with these new electronic versions.

Under the Passport Seva Programme 2.0, application procedures have been simplified through an upgraded online portal. Applicants can now apply for both new and renewed passports exclusively online.

When applying for renewal, entering the existing passport number will automatically populate the form with all current details. Applicants only need to correct any outdated or inaccurate information. Otherwise, the renewal can proceed using the existing data.

The RF chip, embedded on the front cover of the new passport, securely stores personal information and biometric details. According to Consul General Satish Kumar Sivan, around 1,200 e-passports are being issued daily from Dubai. Current valid passports do not need to be replaced immediately; the new chip-enabled passports will be issued upon renewal after expiry.

In another major reform, applicants will no longer have to pay extra fees for correcting minor errors in their applications. Previously, even small mistakes required a full re-application and additional payment. Now, such errors can be rectified free of charge.

After completing the online process, applicants only need to visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) for final submission and biometric verification. The e-passport system was first launched in select Indian cities and has now been fully implemented across the UAE, confirmed A. Amarnath, Deputy Chief of Mission, Indian Embassy, Abu Dhabi.

Applications must be submitted through the official website.

Applicants who have already submitted applications under the old system will still receive the regular, non-chip passports. Upon renewal after 10 years, they will automatically transition to e-passports. Holders of valid passports are advised not to rush for replacement, as their current passports remain fully valid until expiry.

To book appointments with BLS International, which handles Indian passport services in the UAE, applicants can access the link HERE.

Another major change applies to passport photographs. As per International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, the photo must be taken against a plain white background, showing the full face and upper shoulders. The photo must be natural and unfiltered. Religious head coverings are permitted, but the face must be clearly visible.
